July is the month of nutrition. Following to Presidential Decree No. 491, The Nutrition Act of the Philippines, the National Nutrition Council (NNC) leads the observance of National Nutrition Month. And according to the National Nutrition Council of the Philippines, the theme for this year is “Ugaliing Magtanim, Sapat na Nutrisyon Aanihin!”. The theme focuses on food production at home through the family’s own garden. It aims to improve the healthy food consumption of Filipinos, food security, or to be self-sufficient as possible with backyard gardening.

To start home gardening, we should determine the characteristics of a food garden. First is it should be located at home because it will not be called home gardening if it’s not located at home. Second, it should have different varieties of plants so that we will have different selections of food to eat. Third, it serves as supplemental rather than a main source of family’s food consumption or income. Fourth, it is mostly small areas. Food gardens are usually have small areas if it has big area it should be called a farm. Lastly, it should be very easy to start, don’t start with complicated plans.

To give you some ideas on what plants that your home garden should contain, there are top five (5) vegetables to plant. First is broccoli, this vegetable is high in calcium, iron and magnesium as well as vitamin A, B6, and C. Always watch out for the cabbage worms. Second is the peas. Peas are very delicious, aside from being delicious, this vegetable is high in fiber, iron, magnesium, potassium, and vitamins A, B6 and C. Always watch out for the hot weather. Third is beans, these are being grown and its beans are being dried that are real nutritional powerhouses. In general, it is high in iron, fiber, manganese, and phosphorus. Always watch out and harvest it at the right time. Leafy greens is fourth. These leafy greens contain high amounts of calcium, iron, potassium, and vitamins A, B6, and C. Lastly are tomatoes. These are good for us because it is packed with plenty of fiber, iron, magnesium, niacin, potassium, and vitamin A, B6 and C. They’re also a great source of the antioxidant – Lycopene. Always watch out for tomato horn worm.

The theme for this year 2018 aims to improve the food consumption, food security of Filipinos and to be self-sufficient as possible with backyard gardening. We need to be self-sufficient and not just only depending on commercially produced food products. Home gardening is more safe, more sufficient, available, convenient, and worth the hard work than the commercially produced ones.

Reflection (Second Quarter)

Another quarter has passed, and another new knowledge that have been gained. This second quarter, students are ready and hoping that new lessons will be added to their knowledge and exciting activities that they will do again. And I was not disappointed because this second quarter I have learned all about internet access and the HTML.            The lessons of this quarter is easy for me to understand because I was super interested in it. I may have encountered probems but I easily coped up with it and went on. At the first lesson I did not understand it at first but I thrived to learn and I asked my classmates what's all about the lesson and I understood it easily. And for the basic HTML it was easy for me and I love coding. It easily registered in my mind and didn't even have to memorize or review it because there's a trick about it.             Moving on, I will keep what I am doing because it's a good...

Philippines: A Strong Nation

"Resilience is the ability to recover from setbacks, adapt well to change and keep going or choose to give up in the face of adversity, so we engage stronger, wiser and more able." from The Oasis School of Human Relations. The word resilience comes from the Latin word 'resalire' which means "springing back". When the problems and adversities take your life, you instantly cope up and rise again.      We Filipinos are resilient "hindi tayo natitinag". Instances like when we are hit by a typhoon, we easily recover from it, we build raft if the water is too high, or we stock up foods to eat in the middle of the storm. When our houses are destroyed, we immediately clean the debris, we collect scraps that can help fix our houses, and start again. We always stay positive and Fel Cadiz, a Rare program manager in the Philippines, "The Filipino spirit is resilient and remains strong. As they say, the sun shines bright after the storm p...
